Galaxy Groups: laboratories to study galaxy evolution

The main motivation of this mini-workshop is to discuss ideas/results/projects in the field of galaxy groups (and all the physical processes related with this topic). This mini-workshop will be held in La Serena, in order to motivate the participation of researchers and students working in different chilean institutions.

Galaxy groups are ideal laboratories to study galaxy evolution. In this context, groups of galaxies provide us an ideal scenario to study galaxies in dense environments, where the interactions/mergers events are common. Due to these gravitational encounters, the morphology and the stellar/gaseous kinematics of galaxies belonging to this structures may be transformed. In the same context, the strong galaxy-galaxy encounters may eject some neutral gas located in the disk of the interacting galaxies. That gas can form extended tidal tails, which can harbour the formation of new stellar systems, ranging from intergalactic HII regions to Tidal Dwarf Galaxies (TDGs). In-falling galaxy groups in filaments around galaxy clusters may also be the sites where pre-processing occurs and the observed properties of cluster galaxies (e.g. the red sequence) begin to take shape. We will discuss all the phenomena above during our workshop, with the goal of brainstorming and planning new work in the area.
