The ‘first light’ from Beta Pictoris b

A combined 30-minute GPI image of Beta Pictoris depicts the planet Beta Pictoris b (bright spot) orbiting its star (center), which has been subtracted from the image.

Grazie ad una serie di osservazioni realizzate con lo strumento Gemini Planet Imager (GPI), un gruppo di ricercatori del Gemini South Telescope in Cile hanno riportato una immagine spettacolare di un esopianeta che orbita attorno alla sua stella. Il corpo celeste, denominato Beta Pictoris b, si trova a circa 63,5 anni-luce ed impiega 20,5 anni per compiere una rivoluzione.
